Goats cheese, honey? Where? |
What’s with the goats on the M11? It is rather alarming to see their devil’s eyes glaring out from the side of the road. Go back to the hills where you belong, silly creatures.
Serious danger to traffic aside, I cannot see a goat without thinking of goats cheese and I found myself at the checkout with two gorgeous little cheeses in my basket. My beloved thinks he doesn’t like goats cheese so it has to be presented in disguise. Here’s how that went …
Brrrr... goats cheese needs a coat in this weather! |
For 2 portions you will need…
1 heaped tablespoon plain flour
a pinch of salt and a twist of black pepper
1 egg, beaten
100g fresh breadcrumbs
50g walnuts, finely chopped
50g melted butter
2 small crottins of goats cheese about 70g each (how ripe is up to you – I used fresh)
Green salad and runny honey to serve
Hey, watch me do the eggy-paddle! |
Preheat the oven to 180°C
1. Mix the salt and pepper with the flour and sprinkle into a shallow bowl. Place the beaten egg in a second shallow bowl. Place the fresh breadcrumbs in a third bowl with the finely chopped walnuts and pour in the melted butter, tossing the crumbs and the nuts until the butter is evenly distributed.
2. Sprinkle the cheeses with flour, making sure to coat every last centimetre of the surface. Dip in the beaten egg, then in the breadcrumb mixture.
3. Return the coated cheeses to the egg bath, and again to the breadcrumb mixture, gently packing the crumbs around the cheeses to seal well.

4. Transfer the cheeses to a lightly buttered baking tray and place in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes or until golden.
5. Remove from the oven and serve immediately with a green salad and a generous drizzle of decent honey.
Honeyed Goats Cheese in a Walnut Crust - Devilishly Good! |
My stomach started growling just looking at this--goat cheese is one of my favorite foods!
ReplyDeleteI am now craving some goat cheese-these look so delicious and toasty. Definitely a savory treat and glad you gave them this tasty coat for winter! Yum!
ReplyDeleteOh good lord in heaven. This looks amazing. I mean, it's everything I love in life all rolled up in one decadent package. le sigh.
ReplyDeleteGoat cheese is my favorite cheese in the whole wide world. I can never get enough of this stuff, it just tastes SO GOOD. I can't wait to try these, they look out of this world!
ReplyDeleteYou sneaky little devil! I like the way your brain thinks. CK thinks he doesn't like pork...little does HE know! Mwa ha ha.
ReplyDeleteSimple gorgeous nibblies! I love goat cheese, its a bit strong for some people but as far as I'm concerned, the stinkier the better. Love the walnut crust! This should be in a fancy restaurant :)
Buzzed!
I love goat cheese so I am really lovin' this one!
ReplyDeleteThat honestly looks so darn good. I wish I could grab some now!
ReplyDeleteThis looks SO GOOD. I have stuffed cheese in some meat and cook before but not this way. WOW! I love it. I have to give this a try!!
ReplyDeleteFirst off the goat cheese looks amazing! I ADORE the stuff! What a great way to serve it!
ReplyDeleteSecondly - congratulations on your visit from the Fairy Hobmother! What a fun day you're having!
Oh yum! Why on earth does he not like goats cheese? We are going to Bluebell Falls in February for a tour n' tasting and to see them in full swing when the kids are born. I can't wait! I have a recipe for pistachio encrusted goats cheese with a cranberry glaze..... it is finger licking good...
ReplyDeleteI do so love the piquant flavour of goat's cheese.
ReplyDeleteAnd you're right, it is disconcerting to see goats on the road. When you travel between Cape Town and the Cape Town International Airport, there are often goats and cattle ON THE HIGHWAY (where the speed limit is 120km/h). It freaks one out entirely!
I LOVE goat's cheese! I actually had some on a salad tonight! I wish I had seen this recipe before as I would have so much loved to try it!!! I will definitely remember it for next time though. Great idea to add walnuts!!! :-)
ReplyDeleteAaawww so The Fairy Hobmother really exists! I wish she paid me a visit too! ;-)
Hester, I love the goat's winter coat! Your captions always make me laugh. They look absolutely delicious and great idea on your mini party versions.
ReplyDeleteLucky you with the visit from Fairy Hobmother. Oh I wish, I wish... she could come and help me prepare for a teenage Xmas party, clean out the garage, make tablet for the school fête and prepare 200 macarons - all by Friday!
They look just beautiful. Warming, fresh and savoury. it's funny, whenever I see goats I think of capretto... slow roasted in a wood fired oven... and those devil eyes? I'm with you on that. :)
ReplyDeleteYummy! I love all those ingredients and I love them together. Now I want some... :)
ReplyDeleteYumm!
ReplyDeleteHOLY cow, that looks utterly amazing!

ReplyDeleteI ADORE goat cheese and goat milk it reminds me of childhood! It's not easy to get it now, only in a store but back then it was a matter of going to my friend's house and making a big smile to her mom. Wish you all the best! Thanks for bringing back those memories :)

ReplyDeleteHi Hester! Hope you had a wonderful Christmas Season! We had our crazy, chaotic dinner Christmas Eve, but Christmas day went to my neighbour's place for a smaller dinner with five of us...I made these and they were awesome! I'll be making them again...thanks for the recipe! xo
